If you are driving north on Colorado Blvd (WCR 13) near Weld County Road 26 you may see a large blue crane rising in the sky to the northeast. This is at the SVSD treatment plant where a major expansion is going on. This expansion will increase the plant capacity from 3 million gallons a day to 6 million gallons a day. Glacier Construction is the contractor and Frachetti Engineering is the design company for this project. The expansion will be completed in 2013 and at that time in addition to increased capacity SVSD will be able to process the bio-solids or sludge from the plant into a valuable soil amendment for use by private citizens and communities. This expansion will provide the District with the capacity to provide sanitary sewer service for many years to come.

Biosolids

One of the exciting plans for the new plant will be the opportunity to process and make available to residents Class A biosolids also known as properly treated sewage sludge that can be safely applied as fertilizer or soil amendment in homes, gardens and farm fields. Biosolids are a good source of nitrogen and organic matter that is created after the water is removed to produce a dried Class A sludge that is environmentally friendly and useful to the community. There will be more about this opportunity and process in future newsletters.
